Sydney Mfunda Gcaba has been pinned as the KwaZulu-Natal taxi mogul who allegedly paid for the murders of Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane.
The startling revelation was made by the State in the case against 7 men who are suspected of pulling of the hit against the rapper and his celebrity chef friend on 10 February 2023.
Five of the 7 men have made several appearances at the Durban Magistrates Court, while the remaining two are awaiting extradition from eSwatini.
Lindokuhle Thabani Mkhwanazi (30), Lindani Ndimande (35), Siyanda Myeza (21), Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni (36) and Lindokuhle Ndimande (29) are facing 10 charges which include 2 counts of murder, 4 for attempted murder, 2 charges for the possession of firearms and ammunition, and 1 for conspiracy to commit murder.
A further two charges of money laundering were added to the charges.
On Wednesday, 27 March the State shared that Gwabeni had received a more than R800 000 payment from Bright Circle Pty Ltd, one of Gcaba’s companies.
The payment was made under the guise of a “consultation fee”, and was deposited into Gwabeni’s account on 11 February, the day after the Fela In Versace hitmaker and his friend were gunned down outside a restaurant on Florida Road, Durban.
It is alleged that Gwabeni then paid R133 000 to each of his co-accused.
Sydney Mfunda Gcaba is one half of the powerful Gcaba Brothers, the KZN businessman who are feared as the most notorious taxi dons in the province.
The Gcaba brothers are the nephews of former President Jacob Zuma, whose sister is the brothers’ mother.
Hailing from Nkandla, the Gcaba’s are said to be untouchable because of their connections and status, controlling a multi-billion Rand taxi empire, and a number of other businesses.
State prosecutor, Advocate Elvis Gcweka told the court that cellphone records show Gwabeni and Gcabe had spoken telephonically prior to the R800 000 payment being made.
Investigations have not been able to link Gwabeni and Gcaba via a business relationship thus far.
