The Gauteng Department of Education (DOE) has confirmed a Grade 11 learner from Refilwe, Cullinana was allegedly raped and murdered.
On Sunday, 24 March the learner from Chipa-Tabane Secondary School was found lifeless in her cousin’s house after going missing.
The learner had reportedly attended extra classes on Friday and Saturday, and left her home on Sunday at 18h00 but did not return.
A missing person’s report was filed by her mother the same night and information received found that she was last seen with her cousin.
Upon searching for the unidentified female learner, her family allege that her lifeless body was found in a room inside the cousin’s house.
It is alleged that the learner was sexually assaulted before being strangled to death.
According to the DOE, the suspect handed himself over to police on Monday night, 25 March and made an appearance at the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
“We are deeply devastated by the passing of our dear learner, especially through such gruesome circumstances.
We solemnly sympathise with her beloved family, extending our most sincerest condolences to them and the school community at large.”
