- Five learners at David Mama Secondary School in the Eastern Cape were suspended after a viral video showed male learners bullying a girl.
- The Education MEC, Fundile Gade, promised emotional and physical support for the victim, who sustained a head injury.
- The bus driver was also suspended, and an investigation will be concluded within 14 days.
The Education Department in the Eastern Cape has suspended learners at David Mama Secondary School following a viral video showing several male learners bullying a girl learner.
The video shows the girl being physically attacked while sitting helplessly in a school bus. As she gets off, the same boy is seen slapping her while she does not defend herself.
All the perpetrators captured in the video have been suspended pending investigation.

Education MEC Fundile Gade visited the school on Monday morning and assured that the affected learner will receive full emotional and physical support, as she sustained a head injury during the attack.
The Department of Transport has also suspended the bus driver.
According to the MEC, the investigation will be completed within 14 days.
“The Department has a strong policy, as enlisted in the BELA Act, to fight against bullying in schools. Further, the DBE has signed a safety protocol with SAPS to combat violence, drug abuse, and bullying at schools while also conducting random checks at all flagged violent schools in the country,” Gade said.
The MEC committed that the investigation report will be made available to all affected parties.
