A massive operation targeting illegal mining has seen more than 500 suspects arrested in Barberton, with hundreds recently brought up from underground shafts.
The ongoing Operation Vala Umgodi, a joint effort between police, mine security, and the Department of Minerals and Energy, is gaining serious momentum as authorities continue to clear out the illegal operations.
Twenty-four more arrests were made this week, adding to the growing number of individuals detained in the region.
Most of those apprehended face charges related to the Immigration Act, as well as other serious offences concerning illegal mining and trespassing.
Police are still working to verify the exact number of suspects and bring more to the surface.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke with mining expert David van Wyk and provincial safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi to discuss the impact of the clampdown and what the future holds for the region.
