A gripping new docu-series called ‘Steinhest’ tells the story of the downfall of Steinhoff in 2017, which was caused by accounting errors.
Millions of South Africans who had direct or indirect investments in the company through their retirement savings saw their investments in the company plummet by more than R200 billion overnight.
The three-part documentary about the collapse of Steinhoff by the makers of explosive ‘Devilsdorp’ not only sheds light on Markus Jooste’s scandalous business actions but also on how corruption in the private sector all too regularly goes unnoticed.

Richard Finn Gregory who is also the award-winning director of the series The Boers at the End of the World, which won numerous awards said his main interest in telling the story was all about looking for the stories behind those involved.
“I was approached by the production company Idea Candy, which was responsible for ‘Devilsdorp’ which was such a big hit for Showmax last year. This is the next big docu-series they wanted to do for the platform. They invited me and asked me how I would like to approach telling the story. It was interesting for me because I am not from a financial background.”
“I said to them the first thing that I would like to do is approach it differently. It is very difficult telling a story with numbers, yes the numbers are big and they are jaw-dropping, but really I think the story is more about the people behind them.
The people involved are at the centre of it all, their relationships, and what makes them tick, what is in the background that would make them do something like this.” said Finn Gregory.
