It’s been three weeks now since learners fully returned to school and a lot has happened. We all saw what happened at Hoerskool Jan Veljoen yesterday. Angry parents and learners were in a standoff as allegations of racism at the school surfaced.
The DA has proposed that we add an extra hour in schools for kids to catch up with the curriculum.
Skhumba doesn’t think adding an extra hour will positively impact learners.
“After the break, I can’t take anything in. There’s no way kids will be at school up until three. Fridays will not work in the townships. If kids want to do extra classes let them do them on their own, let’s not impose it on them.
“Do you think the teachers will be happy to work another hour?” He continued.
“Imagine school added with an extra hour. Would you be able to handle an extra hour of school.?”
Shana, a high school learner shares,” Knowing that I have double periods every day is too much. Going home is nice, I need to rest. This hour thing I don’t see it working. Learners are under pressure with the work that they are doing. An extra hour will not work.’
Lola says her son is okay with staying behind at school to play sports but doesn’t want an extra hour of school.
An educator doesn’t think an extra hour can work as they still have marking and admin to do. “Let’s not abuse my passion, I still have to mark and I still have admin stuff to do. An extra hour will not work,” she shared.
