Zolo Tongo, the man who admitted to orchestrating the murder of Anni Dewani is up for parole in March.
Twelve years after the newly married Dewani was shot and killed in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
The Swedish bride was shot in an apparent botched hijacking attempt, whilst on honeymoon in Cape Town.
Her husband Shrien escaped the ordeal unscathed, while Anni died on 13 November 2010.
Anni’s body was found on 14 November, in a taxi she and her husband were travelling in the night before.
Anni Dewani would have turned 40-years old on 12 March. Charges against her husband Shrien Dewani were dropped due to insufficient evidence.
Twelve years later Anni’s family still has no closure from her death
Zolo Tongo, the driver of the taxi the couple were in, said he hired two hitmen at the request of Anni’s husband, Shrien.
The mastermind was sentenced to 18-years in prison, while the man who pulled the trigger, Xolile Mngeni received a life sentence. Mngeni died in prison from a brain tumour 4-years after Anni’s death.
He was diagnosed with the tumour whilst standing trial for her murder in 2011.
His accomplice, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, also pleaded guilty to Dewani’s murder and was sentenced to 25-years in prison.
Anni’s family will be opposing Tongo’s parole application. Twelve years later the Hindocha family still don’t have answers.
Tongo was previously up for parole in 2020 but the parole board revoked the decision to release him.
Her father, Vinod Hindocha has since penned a book, “Anni Dewani: A father’s story”, detailed the torture his family has endured since his daughter’s murder.
He appealed to her husband to break his self-imposed silence and give him the answers he so desperately seeks.
Anni’s family were in disbelief when South African Judge Jeanette Traverso, acquitted Shrien Dewani of all charges.
Since the conclusion of the trial the English businessman returned home and has never commented about his wife’s murder. He maintains he had no involvement in Anni’s death.
