As part of our Kaya Cares initiative, Thomas and Skhumba broadcast live from Ditawana Primary School in Orlando, Soweto on Friday morning.
Kaya 959 together with Shoes4Souls, Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa, and Meals on Wheels, surprised the learners at Ditawana Primary School with brand new goodies, including a school bag with stationery and school shoes for the new school year.
Ditawana Primary School’s principal Nomasonto Luvuno says the school is facing many challenges at the moment.
“The school started operating in 1966. I’m the 5th principal at the school, it is one of the older schools and it is not cared for.
“We are happy to have you guys at the school as you’ll give us more exposure. The challenges that we are facing at the moment are that buildings are old and dilapidated. Burglaries are high because the school is on the outskirts – security is a problem.”
Craig Smith, Founder of Shoes4Souls says they are about giving people hope and dignity.
“We are about restoring hope and dignity – that’s really our purpose. It came about by really working with the homeless people in Pretoria that I saw the need for shoes and how that can really help a person.
“Before you knew it, you are looking at children needing shoes and the fact that if we’re talking about hope and dignity, coming to school without a pair of school shoes, man that’s not cool. For us, it’s just a great privilege to be here today with Kaya 959.
Mpho Rantsoabe, Area Director at Meals on Wheels shares; “Meals on Wheels is a humanitarian organisation, we do welfare services, we do disaster reliefs, to try and impact our communities positively.
“We started this work in 1964 and we’ve grown from serving about 16 senior citizens in 1964 to serving about 30 million meals per year,” he said in part.
Georgett Naidoo – CSI Specialist at Coca-Cola CSI says they are “passionate about creating shared value through the many initiatives implemented in the communities.”
They work on initiatives like the Kaya Cares Back to School campaign to help balance the scales and play a role in securing economic inclusion and a better future.
