A new Covid-19 variant has been detected in France, which reportedly has 46 mutations.
The B.1.640.2 or ‘IHU’ variant was first identified in France in November 2021.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the new variant has not posed much of a threat unlike Omicron.
So far, 12 people have been infected with the variant detected in France. The central African country, Cameroon has been associated as the country of origin for the B.1.640.2 variant.
The first case was a patient who contracted that variant after returning from Cameroon.
WHO is said to be monitoring the the new variant and will raise the alarm should the mutations be cause for concern.
France has, over the last 4-days shown a significant increase in new positive Covid-19 cases. Taking the infection rate to well above the 200K mark.
The high infection rate has been linked to the festive period and international travel, despite a high vaccination rate.
Meanwhile South Africa recorded 8, 078 new infections on Tuesday. The death toll in the country is currently over 91K after 139 deaths were confirmed.
