President Cyril Ramaphosa is to addresses South Africans on the newly detected B.1.1.529 coronavirus variant.
The new COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529, first detected in South Africa this week, was on Friday designated as a “Variant of Concern” by the World Health Organisation (WHO), which named it “Omicron”.

A “variant of concern” is the WHO’s top category of worrying COVID-19 variants.
It was first reported to the WHO from South Africa on November 24, and has also been identified in Botswana, Belgium, Hong Kong and Israel.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation at 20h00 today, Sunday, 28 November 2021, on developments in the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement released on Friday, the President will convene the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) on Sunday, 28 November 2021, to assess developments in the COVID-19 pandemic, including scientific updates around the newly detected coronavirus variant.
The outcome of the NCCC discussions and further consultations will be communicated in the coming days.
“Government urges all South Africans to vaccinate and to remain disciplined in applying the known safety measures, to ensure a safe and joyful festive season with families and friends,” concludes the statement.
