South Africa recorded a total of 9 020 new COVID-19 cases as of 29 December.
The number of active cases is now at 197 076.
This total number of recorded active cases indicates a decrease by 2 290 between 28 and 29 December.
Gauteng’s active cases are now at 23 381 which increased by at least 1 839 recorded cases since 28 December.
Daily deaths in South Africa is now at 81 leaving the total number of deaths at 90 935.
The recovery rate is at 91.6%.
The Omicron variant is said to be less severe than the Delta variant.
The World Health Organisation warns however that it must not be dismissed as “mild”.
It says that studies about the variant are still ongoing and warns that it is important to remember that all COVID-19 variants can cause severe disease or death.
It must also be noted that the Delta variant is still dominant worldwide.
