French football star and PSG forward Kylian Mbappe has entered the last year of his contract and informed the PSG hierarchy of his intentions to leave at the end of his contract.
The 24-year-old signed a new contract with the League One side in May 2022, which would see him at the club until 2025 should he activate the one-year extension.
However, Mbappe has had a change of heart following a disappointing campaign. His legal representatives informed the Qatari-owned team of his intention to leave in 2024.
It is believed that Mbappe currently earns around R20 million per week in wages.
Addressing the media, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi revealed that the player must sign an extension or they’ll be forced to sell him as they can’t afford to let him go for free next season.
“We want him to stay, but he can’t leave for free. It was our oral agreement, and he had expressed it publicly in an interview. So it’s not debatable. And I was really shocked to learn that he intended to leave for free. It’s very disappointing because Kylian is a fantastic boy, a real gentleman, and leaving for free, weakening the biggest French club, it’s not him.
“That’s why he has to decide next week, or at most in two weeks. And if he doesn’t want to sign a new contract, the door is open. It’s like that for him and for everyone else. No one is bigger than the club—no player, not even me. It’s very clear,” Al-Khelaifi.
PSG value Mbappe at around R2 billion, and Spanish side Real Madrid are favourites to secure his signature.
