Gauteng’s OR Tambo International Airport took the third spot in the prestigious Skytrax World Airport Award for Best Airport in Africa. OR Tambo is ranked 54th on the list of the world’s best airports.
The Cape Town International Airport took first place for the 6th consecutive year. Durban’s King Shaka International Airport claimed second place.
Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, David Maynier, said the Cape Town International Airport has also won the award for Best Airport Staff in Africa for 2021, which they last won in 2016.
“Winning this award is even more significant considering the challenging year that the travel industry has experienced, and so we are incredibly proud of the team at Cape Town International Airport who continue to provide a consistent world-class service to those visiting Cape Town and the Western Cape,” he said.
Maynier added that with the successful roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines, he has no doubt that the tourism and travel industry will recover.
“… when it does, we will be ready to welcome visitors to Cape Town and the Western Cape, offering them the excellent service they have become accustomed to receiving. This is critical to our strategy to save jobs and rebuild the economy in the Western Cape,” he said.
Qatar bags #1 spot
Qatar’s Hamad International Airport has been named the World’s Best Airport.
Other big winners include; Istanbul for the World’s Most Improved Airport, Changi Airport Singapore was named the World’s Best Airport in the 10 to 15 million Passenger category, and took the awards for the World’s Best Airport Staff and the Best Airport Staff in Asia.
Tokyo Haneda Airport was ranked number 2 in the world and also walked away with the Best Airport in Asia, the World’s Best Domestic Airport, the World’s Best Airport Cleanliness and the Best Airport PRM / Accessible Facilities.
