One person has been killed in a suspected illegal mining explosion in Bram Fischerville, Soweto on Thursday afternoon, 20 July.
The latest explosion comes just a day after the devastating JHB CBD gas explosion which also claimed 1 life, injuring 48 others.
According to reports, the explosion on Thursday is said to be caused by dynamite which was connected to a vehicle battery.
The victim has been identified as Reason Dube, who died after sustaining serious injuries from the explosion.
One person had to be rushed to hospital to be treated for injuries, and one other sustained minor injuries.
An investigation into the explosion is underway and police have since cordoned off the illegal mining site due to safety concerns.
Johannesburg EMS spokesperson, Xolile Khumalo said the explosion likely occurred after dynamite sticks were connected to a vehicle battery.
“The City of Johannesburg firefighters responded to an explosive incident in Bram Fischerville, Johannesburg just before 14h30 on Thursday afternoon.
The explosion resulted from a dynamite that was connected to a vehicle battery.
One person has died from injuries sustained from the explosive, one rushed to hospital and another sustained minor injuries. The incident is suspected to be an illegal mining incident.”
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi doesn’t believe the two explosions are linked.
