Egoli Gas believes the Johannesburg CBD explosion is unlikely to be caused by a gas pipeline or leak.
The gas company said its network had not experienced a pressure loss, which indicates that its gas pipelines are intact.
This after a massive explosion ripped through the JHB city center on Wednesday afternoon, 19 July at approximately 17h00.
Further to this, the company says its gas pipelines operate at extremely low pressure providing safe gas supply in highly built up areas and are therefore unlikely to cause an explosion.
In addition, Egoli Gas says the collapse of the stretch of road on Bree Street is mainly in the center, and says its pipelines are located in the road servitudes on the sides of the roads.

An update from the company on Thursday morning, 20 July cites a small leak being detected on the servitude pipeline at the corner of Bree and Eloff, which it says could have been caused by the collapse of the road.
Egoli Gas also notes several videos and pictures doing the rounds on social media, where manhole covers were blown off and a white “gas-like” substance rising to the surface from these as well as from cracks in the road.
It says piped natural gas is not visible to the human eye and it’s believed this is visible warm steam.
“The pipeline running on the road servitude of Bree Street has been checked and is not damaged. A small leak has been detected on the servitude pipeline at the corner of Bree and Eloff on a 100mm pipe.
We believe the crack in the pipe has been caused by the collapse of the road.
Egolis Gas notes that there are approximately 15 other utility lines in the same area, for example a sewerage line that runs directly underneath the street.
We would like to reiterate that our pipelines run on the servitude of the road.
We will keep the public posted as we continue assessing any damage to our network and assisting in providing Piped Natural Gas expertise to the authorities, ensuring the area is maintained safe.”
