CCTV footage capturing the exact moment the Bree Street explosion hit has just been shared with Kaya 959.
Moments before the suspected explosion, the busy street was bustling with commuters and business owners going about their day during the afternoon peak, at 17h30 on Wednesday, 19 July.
The footage shows one lucky man narrowly escaping impact from a taxi which was propelled upwards into the air.
His quick reaction, springing away from the loud bang before the road split open, saw the gentleman taking cover at the closest building.
Taxis that were all parked and waiting for commuters, neatly one behind the other, were all flung into the air from the force of the blast.
Some vehicles were crushed by the weight of the taxis, while a few vehicles overturned.
Chaos ensued after the explosion, as terrified people begun running to escape the area.
A cause for the explosion has yet to be determined, and while Egoli Gas released a statement saying it’s unlikely the Bree Street explosion was a result of a gas leak, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says gas experts from various institutions have been called in to determine what caused the blast.
