Flash floods have hit Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, hours after a tornado’s rampage in Inanda on Tuesday, 27 June.
The tornado that touched down in Bhambayi and affected the Phoenix, KwaMashu and Inanda areas, caused damage to over 50 homes.
Three people have sustained minor injuries, and there are reports that one person has since died in the overnight flash floods, which is affecting several parts of the city.
Videos of roads in Durban looking like angry rivers have been shared on social media, with one user sharing that a number of minibus taxis have washed away in the floods.
Meanwhile, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), says a man who was herding cows in Zwelisha, north of Durban, is presumed to have drowned after being swept away in a river.
Despite efforts by RUSA officers to scour the river banks from Zwelisha to Ottawa, Durban, the herdsman could not be found.
He was reportedly last seen herding cows in Palmview, and experienced some difficulty traversing the river near his home in Zwelisha.
Eyewitnesses shared with RUSA officers that the cow managed to exit the river further down, but the man had reportedly disappeared underwater and didn’t come back up.
The latest floods in Durban comes a year after the devastating flooding that occurred in the province in April 2022.
