49 medals in the bag: SA’s Special Olympics team received a hero’s welcome at OR Tambo.
Following their outstanding performance at the World Games in Berlin, Germany, members of the Special Olympics South Africa national team arrived at O.R. Tambo International Airport on Wednesday to a hero’s welcome.
64 athletes and 21 coaches from various locations of South Africa made up the national Special Olympics squad, who diligently scooped 22 gold, 20 silver, and 7 bronze medals.
Special Olympics SA chairperson Mathews Phosa shared how the team’s achievement ignited a sense of pride and unity throughout South Africa.
“Our athletes’ remarkable achievements have ignited a sense of pride and unity throughout South Africa,” Phosa said.
“By showcasing their abilities, they have shattered misconceptions surrounding intellectual disabilities and fostered a more inclusive society.
Phosa also commended the team for the exceptional medal tally.
“This outstanding medal tally not only celebrates their sporting achievements but also serves as a powerful symbol of hope and inspiration for millions of individuals with intellectual disabilities across our nation.” said Phosa,
The Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma was also there at the airport to welcome the team.
