- The Democratic Alliance has announced a R500,000 reward for information that could assist in identifying those responsible for the deaths of women in Ekurhuleni.
- The announcement comes days after SAPS offered a R400,000 reward for information on the cases.
- However, National Police Deputy Commissioner Tebello Mosikili says there is a process that law enforcement follows when offering rewards.
R500,000 is up for grabs for anyone who might assist the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni to find the perpetrator(s) responsible for the brutal murders of women in the metro.
The reward was announced on Thursday, 17 September 2026, by DA mayoral candidate in Ekurhuleni, Khathutshelo Rasilingwane.
The reward comes a few days after the South African Police Service (SAPS) offered R400,000 to anyone who might have valuable information that could help bring the suspect(s) to book.
“The DA is adding to the efforts of law enforcement already underway, and we are doing this to supplement and augment those efforts. The DA is adding extra reason for all relevant information to be handed over now, to address this crisis quickly,” said Rasilingwane.
She said any information must be submitted to the South African Police Service on the record, and the DA must be provided with proof that the information was handed over to SAPS for the reward to be considered.
“The DA will not accept direct tip-offs or reports, but will only consider properly lodged police records as sufficient.”
However, National Police Deputy Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said only law enforcement can comment on or confirm that they are putting forward a reward.
“We do not know what the conditions of the Democratic Alliance are. So far, I know the informants will be in the communities. I don’t know how the DA is going to combine this, whether they are legally correct,” she said.
In announcing the reward, what I would have done would be to collaborate with the state because this is the state’s issue.”
Mosikili said she had never seen politicians offer rewards in police cases, adding that there is a process followed by police when it comes to offering rewards.
The DA says it is offering the reward because it “cares deeply about the safety of women in Ekurhuleni, and South Africa at large.”
Nine women were found dead, stripped of their dignity and discarded like rubbish in different parts of Ekurhuleni in two months.
