- An ad hoc parliamentary committee has been established to investigate claims made by KwaZulu-Natal’s top police official.
- Honourable Molapi Soviet Lekganyane will lead the inquiry as its newly elected chairperson.
- The committee will probe allegations of political interference and corruption within the police force.
The Honourable Molapi Soviet Lekganyane has been elected as the Chairperson of a newly formed ad hoc parliamentary committee, tasked with investigating explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The establishment of the committee follows a motion approved by the National Assembly, prompted by Mkhwanazi’s claims of high-level political interference in policing.
The allegations, which have sent shockwaves through the country’s security apparatus, were deemed serious enough to warrant a formal parliamentary inquiry.
Parliamentarians across the political spectrum agreed to the formation of the ad hoc committee, with the aim of establishing the facts and ensuring accountability.
The terms of reference for the committee were finalised in a joint meeting of the Portfolio Committees on Police and Justice, setting the stage for a thorough and impartial investigation.
Mr Lekganyane will now lead the committee’s efforts to scrutinise the claims, which include allegations that senior police officials have ties to criminal syndicates and have actively interfered in police operations.
The committee’s findings could have significant implications for law enforcement in South Africa and will be closely watched by the public and political observers alike.
The committee is expected to begin its formal proceedings in the coming weeks.
