“We apologize Kelly, but we have decided to relieve you from performing at our Jazz Festival.”
The Maseru Jazz Festival is the second music event to drop gospel singer Kelly Khumalo from its lineup amid the ongoing murder trial of footballer Senzo Meyiwa.
In the space of a week, Kelly has been scrapped off a Women’s Tribute event, as well as the Jazz Festival after concerns were raised about the possibility that the singer was implicated in the murder of her ex-boyfriend, Meyiwa.
This after a cellphone analyst revealed that Kelly may have been in contact with one of the men accused of murdering Meyiwa, in what the State is calling a botched home invasion.
Kelly Khumalo allegedly received two calls from accused No.5, Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli, days before Meyiwa was gunned down at the Khumalos’ family home in Vosloorus.
Cellphone data proved the number belonged to Kelly, noting the two occasions the calls came through on 02 August 2014, and then again on 15, October 2014.
Because of the backlash that the Empini hitmaker has been subjected to online, the Maseru Jazz Festival has also opted to “put Kelly Khumalo on hold.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 02 August, Maseru Jazz Festival Management said they noted social media comments regarding Kelly Khumalo, and wish to respect the professionalism of the legal team and processes.
“As Maseru Park we wish to inform you that we have seen comments on social media about one of our guest performers, and we wish to inform the public that we are putting Kelly Khumalo on hold.
The management of Maseru Park in the interest of our Jazz Festival, have taken the decision to relieve Kelly Khumalo of the obligation to perform at our festival, and we acknowledge that she is not guilty, until proven so.”
