Liberty’s Tsungai Masendeke breaks down why financial protection is an act of love, not just paperwork

The Joburg suburbs are lush, lined with trees and topiaries. Our morning breeze is animated by the melodies of colourful birds, singing their songs and telling us that the September rains are coming.
Do you have an umbrella?
If not, Liberty Certified Financial Planner Tsungai Masendeke has news for you: “You need an umbrella before the rains start!”
She joined the Kaya Breakfast team recently to share valuable financial tips on preparing for the future. She also shared some sobering truths about how a lack of income protection can be detrimental to your earnings and assets, including the fact that, if you don’t start planning now, some chronic or debilitating conditions could eventually make you uninsurable. Tsungai says financial future planning “is really not just about yourself, it’s also about looking after those that are important to you.”
Speaking with a smile in her voice, you could almost see the twinkle in her eye when she reminded the Kaya Breakfast team that it is Wills Week and that it is time to protect your legacy by ensuring you have a will in place. A will, she reminded us, is essentially your ultimate love letter to the people who are dear and special to you.
In her funny, vivid and illustrative manner, Tsungai offered another memorable analogy: you can have shoes, but if they don’t have shoelaces, they’re not enough.
The shoelaces, in this case, are “appropriate liquidity protection” – which could mean that if you have debt, you need the appropriate risk cover in place to protect against that debt.
And, with the slang and wit of a West African aunty, she delivered the instruction: “I beg-o, do the right thing.”
Make sure your affairs are in order. Protect your children’s legacy. Plan for your estate.
There is plenty more to the conversation, including practical advice on how to protect your legacy, the life you’ve built and the people who matter to you.
