Six women found dead across Ekurhuleni as fear grips communities

Murder and sexual offences decrease, but concerns remain over South Africa’s ‘lived reality’

  • Fear is gripping communities across Ekurhuleni following the discovery of a sixth woman’s body in KwaThema, Springs, on Tuesday morning.
  • The bodies have been found in different locations, including Kempton Park, Olifantsfontein and KwaThema, with several women found partially clothed and bruised.
  • Police have confirmed that four of the women had been sexually assaulted, but have not confirmed whether the cases are linked.

There are concerns among residents across the City of Ekurhuleni following the discovery of a sixth woman’s body.

The sixth body was found on Tuesday morning in KwaThema, Springs.

This comes after four bodies were found in Kempton Park, while the fifth was discovered in Olifantsfontein on Monday, 14 September.

The fourth body found in Kempton Park was identified as 38-year-old runner Elizabeth Tsontso Moselakgomo, who went missing last week after leaving home for a run.

Now, a sixth body has been discovered.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the discovery and said the area had been cordoned off.

“It is an active crime scene,” she said.

The six women were found in different locations, including on roadsides, in open veld, and behind buildings.

Several of the women were found partially clothed and with visible bruising, while one of them was in a state of decomposition.

Police said on Monday that four of the women had been sexually assaulted.

The discovery of the sixth body has heightened concerns among residents, although police have not confirmed that the cases are linked or that a serial killer is responsible.

Outrage directed at the President

There has also been growing outrage on social media, with women expressing frustration and fear over what they describe as the lack of safety for women in South Africa.

A list containing safety tips for women has also been circulating on social media, encouraging women to remain vigilant as concerns over the killings continue to grow.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has also come under fire on social media, with some women questioning why he has not publicly addressed the growing concerns surrounding violence against women.

Last year, the president declared Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) a national disaster.

    • regulate, in harmony with international standards, the processing of personal information by public and private bodies in a manner that gives effect to the right to privacy subject to justifiable limitations that are aimed at protecting other rights and important interests,
    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose.
