SAPS warns women to avoid exercising alone as sixth body is found in Gauteng

  • SAPS has urged women in Gauteng to avoid exercising or running alone and to exercise in groups, stay in populated and well-lit areas, carry their cellphones and tell someone where they are going.
  • The warning follows the discovery of six women’s bodies in Kempton Park, Olifantsfontein and KwaThema, Springs, with missing runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo among those identified.
  • SAPS Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane says investigations have been intensified, with a multidisciplinary team pursuing leads and one suspect already in custody in connection with the first body discovered in July.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged women in Gauteng to be vigilant while exercising and avoid running alone.

This comes after the discovery of the bodies of four women in the Kempton Park area, with the fourth one positively identified as missing runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo on Monday, 14 September 2026.

Since then, a fifth woman’s body was discovered in Olifantsfontein, and another was found in a naked and decomposed state on the side of the road in KwaThema, Springs, in Ekurhuleni, on Tuesday, 15 September.

In a post on its official social media accounts on Monday, SAPS said women should avoid exercising or running alone.

“Where possible, walk, exercise and run in groups. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Avoid isolated areas and, where possible, exercise in populated, well-lit areas. Keep your cellphone with you and remain aware of your surroundings,” SAPS wrote.

Meanwhile, Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has assured the public that SAPS will stop at nothing to catch the killers and bring them to book.

According to Dimpane, a multidisciplinary team has been assigned to intensify investigations.

“We will not rest until we have established the truth. Where there is evidence linking individuals to these crimes, we will pursue them relentlessly and ensure that they face the full might of the law,” said Dimpane.

So far, only one suspect has been arrested in connection with the first body, which was discovered in July, and he is still in police custody.

    • regulate, in harmony with international standards, the processing of personal information by public and private bodies in a manner that gives effect to the right to privacy subject to justifiable limitations that are aimed at protecting other rights and important interests,
    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose.
