Mamelodi Sundowns have secured their seventh consecutive DStv Premiership title after annihilating a 10-man Kaizer Chiefs 5-1 at the FNB Stadium on Thursday evening.
The win also marked the 17th overall championship for the Brazilians, with six games to spare. Sundowns are looking to end the season unbeaten in the Premiership.
Overall, Sundowns are unbeaten in 48 matches in the league across the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. Their last loss came at the hands of SuperSport United in September 2022.
However, the same cannot be said for Kaizer Chiefs who suffered their fourth defeat in five games.
Leading up to the fixture, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena said that he was expecting a tough contest from his rivals.
“Chiefs is Chiefs and we all know that in any day they can turn up. They are a big Club and they deserve incredible respect. They have a good coach and I know him personally because I learnt a lot from him. They’ve got some very good players and they are a team that is capable of beating anybody,” coach Rhulani stated.
“What will be the message for the players? That we are playing against a very big team and our arch-rivals. We are playing an important game which requires us to go there with humility and a lot of respect. I think as a fierce competitor, Coach Cavin Johnson would like to win the game and I think he knows it’s the same with me. Furthermore, winning the title will be very sweet because it’s an important competition for us and it’s an important season.”

On Friday morning, Sol Phenduka opened the lines for listeners to voice what stood out this week. Sol himself discussed the dismal season performance by Kaizer Chiefs with Mpho Maboi. Other topics of discussion include the use of muti at the office; the confusing labelling of Putco buses; seemingly homeless people sitting or sleeping outside Luthuli House; and more.
