Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have extended the contract of rising star Mfundo Vilakazi, keeping him at Naturena until June 2028.
Vilakazi joined the Chiefs’ Youth Development Academy in 2021, starting with the under-17 team and then moving up to the reserve team, where he impressed for two seasons.
The 18-year-old with natural talent began training with the senior squad this season and quickly earned a spot on the team, much to the joy of Kaizer Chiefs fans.
He has been part of the matchday squad six times, making appearances off the bench in the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates and in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 matches.
The Soweto-born attacking midfielder expressed his happiness after signing a new contract, saying:
“I’m thrilled to be part of a big Club like Chiefs. Playing for the senior team and representing Kaizer Chiefs has always been my dream since I was young. I can’t wait to contribute to the Club and show my gratitude to the management for believing in me. I appreciate all the fans who motivate me to do better, and I promise not to let them down.”
In expressing his happiness about the contract extension, Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. said, “We are thrilled to have Mfundo with us for the long term. He is an exceptional talent, and we look forward to seeing him showcase his skills with the senior team for years to come. It’s all about hard work for him now, and we know he will give his best.
“Mfundo’s promotion highlights the success of our development structures. We have created an environment that nurtures talent for the senior team, which is at the core of Kaizer Chiefs’ values. We have dedicated individuals – from the youth teams to the reserves – who focus on developing top footballers for the senior team rather than just winning games.”
