On again, off again! Johannesburg’s water issues continue after another weekend of low pressure to no water for parts of the city.
This after frustrated residents went two weeks without water due to a feedboard problem at the Eikenhof pump station. While repairs to the feederboard were complete on Tuesday, 05 March residents in affected areas were informed that Rand Water was pumping at 100% but taps were still running dry.
A number of towers and reservoirs were still empty on Friday, 15 March and residents in parts of Roodepoort and Randburg remained the hardest hit.
Last week, a closed valve was given as the reason for many parts of Roodepoort, including Florida, Bergbron, Quellerina and surrounding areas were without water.
As a result the supply into the system was restricted, particularly a the Linden 1 & 2 and Kensington B systems.
On Sunday, 17 March JHB Water said there were measures in place to ease the current water supply challenges, including throttling of reservoir outlets to balance the systems.
The heatwave and lack of rain was blamed for the increase in water demand, however a number of areas are still without water, so an increase in demand seems unlikely.
Poor pressure and no water is still being experienced in Diepsloot and Riverside View, Commando, Berea, Soweto and Deep South Region.
While JHB’s water issues continue MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Department, Jack Sekwaila says there is a 10-year plan to stop water outage but the City of Joburg has to wait until May.
This is, according to Sekwaila when the plan will be tabled at a council sitting, in order to create a legal framework to enforce infrastructural maintenance.
