Bafana Mahungela, the 21-year old student accused of murdering teacher Kirsten Kluyts will spend Christmas behind bars.
This after the student’s bail hearing was postponed to Friday, 29 December.
Mahungela, a Varsity College student was arrested on 26 November after CCTV footage placed him at the scene where Kluyts’ naked body was discovered.
Kluyts’ naked body was found along the George Lea Park trail at the Sandton Sports Club on 29 October by fellow runners who were participating in a MyRun 5km race.
CCTV footage placed Mahungela at the scene and shows him removing Kluyts’ blue T-shirt and wearing it.
However, Mahungela’s Defence Advocate, Itumeleng Masako, says this doesn’t provide sufficient cause that his client murdered Kluyts.
Initial reports suggested Kluyts was raped and then strangled to death, however autopsy results show that she died of blunt force trauma to the head.
It was also established that Kluyts was 14-weeks pregnant at the time of her death, which is why she walked the race instead of running.
Kluyts was reportedly ambushed by her killer who took her by surprise as she was jogging with headphones on when she was attacked.
Her body was found near a secluded part of the club, near a gate which was opened for the race event.
Kluyts’ attacker took her clothes and watch, leaving her cellphone and headphones behind.
