The autopsy of Kirsten Kluyts did not offer confirmation that the 34-year old teacher was raped before she was killed, but it did highlight that the teacher was pregnant.
On Tuesday, 19 December Kluyts’ autopsy was presented to the Alexandra Magistrates Court, revealing that the avid runner did not have lacerations or abrasions around her genitalia.
While this does not mean that the probability Kluyts was sexually assaulted is low, her autopsy did not show any signs she sustained obvious injuries from a rape.
The court heard how a district surgeon would need to be appointed to determine whether she was raped before her murder or not.
Kluyts’ naked body was found along the George Lea Park trail at the Sandton Sports Club on 29 October by fellow runners who were participating in a MyRun 5km race.
It was reported that Kluyts was strangled to death and raped, allegedly by 21-year old Bafana Mahungela who was arrested on 26 November.
The Varsity College Student put on Kluyts’ blue T-shirt and fled the scene, but he claims Kluyts was already dead before he encountered her body.
Mahungela said he only took Kluyts’ T-shirt because he had checked her body to see if she had a pulse, and didn’t want to leave any DNA evidence on her because he would have been accused of killing her.
The full autopsy of Kirsten Kluyts was not made public, however a few details were shared including that she died of blunt force trauma to the head, and not because she had been strangled to death.
Another devastating fact was that Kluyts was approximately 14-weeks pregnant.
Kluyts was reportedly ambushed by her killer who took her by surprise as she was jogging with headphones on when she was attacked.
Her body was found near a secluded part of the club, near a gate which was opened for the race event.
Kluyts’ attacker took her clothes and watch, leaving her cellphone and headphones behind.
