Kelly Khumalo’s Gospel Explosion show at the State Theatre has been postponed.
The singer made the announcement on her social media on Monday, 21 August, saying a new date will be communicated soon.
This comes after mass public outrage over the event, following the Empini singer’s possible implication in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.
Last month a cellphone analyst revealed Kelly may have been in contact with one of the men accused of murdering Meyiwa, in what the State is calling a “botched home invasion.”
Kelly Khumalo allegedly received two calls from accused No.5, Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli, days before Meyiwa was gunned down at the Khumalos’ family home in Vosloorus.
Cellphone data showed the number belonged to Kelly, noting the two occasions the calls came through on 02 August 2014, and then again on 15, October 2014.
As a result of the revelations in the Senzo Meyiwa trial, a number of organizers dropped the singer from their lineups.
While Kelly responded to her cancelled gigs, firmly stating regardless of who comes, she will continue doing what she loves doing, calls to cancel the singer are not dying down.
With the Gospel Explosion showcase set to take place this Saturday, 26 August, speculation is that the State Theatre decided not to go ahead with Kelly’s headlining display due to mounting public pressure.
The show was a partnership with Kelly’s entertainment company, KK Entertainment, and the South African State Theatre.
State Theatre has not made a statement regarding the postponement of the event.
