Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) has confirmed that a KwaZulu-Natal mother chained her 7-year old daughter inside their informal home in Redcliffe, Veralum.
The woman, who reportedly chained her daughter to a rafter from the roof, had left the child restrained from the morning.
RUSA officers found the child with shackles and a lock around her ankles.
The child was found after members of the community, who walked past the home, peered into the window after hearing a child call for help.
“RUSA received a call from a resident in the informal settlement in Redcliffe, Veralum, requesting assistance after a mob began assaulting the mother of the child.
According to the caller, residents walking past the informal home peered through a window and noticed a female child shackled with a metal chain.
The chain was fastened with a lock, as per the picture, and the opposite end was secured to a rafter along the roof.
The child is believed to be approximately 7-years old.”
RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram said the mother escaped the mob and locked herself in her home with her daughter.
Mother and daughter were since transported to the Veralum Police Station, where an investigation is underway.
