Police have arrested a 31-year old stepfather for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and killing her 1-year old baby girl on Sunday, 09 July.
As reported by SAPS, the suspect is accused of assaulting the infant in the absence of her mother, with an unknown object.
The incident which took place in Bothashoek village, outside Burgersfort in Sekhukhune District was brought to the attention of police after neighbours witnessed the suspect assaulting his girlfriend.
Police found the 1-year old laying on a sofa, unconscious, with bruises on her face and without a pulse.
The child was certified dead on scene.
“It is alleged that the suspect, a stepfather assaulted the victim in the absence of the mother with the unknown object. It is reported that the 28-year old mother left the deceased with her 3-year old sister at about 18h00 to search for her boyfriend who was at a tavern.
According to information available at this stage, it is alleged that the suspect returned home before the girlfriend and subsequently assaulted the 1-year old.
It is reported that the girlfriend returned back home shortly thereafter, and the suspect accused her of stalking him. The suspect ultimately assaulted her in the presence of their neighbours.”

The stepfather is expected to appear at the Praktiseer Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 11 July, where he will face charges of assault and murder that is domestic-violence related.
