3,000 SANDF members will be let go over the next three years.
In order to remain within its budget allotment, which is steadily being decreased, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will cut its size by 3,000 personnel over the course of the next three years.
Employee salary consumes over 69 per cent of the R49 billion defence budget.

Thandi Modise, Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs responded to a written inquiry from Isaac Mafanya of the Economic Freedom Fighters in parliament.
“The department of defence was forced to implement HR [human resources] cost-saving measures/interventions to reduce HR cost pressures,” she said.
“The intent of the planned HR interventions is to reach equilibrium between the COE allocation received and required personnel to maintain an effective defence capability.”
“This will translate in the planned exit of approximately 3 048 uniformed members through MEM over the indicated financial years,” Modise said in her reply.
