Five people have been arrested for the assault on Amathole District Municipality councillor Nanziwe Rulashe.
Video footage of the councillor being assaulted and dragged from her offices by armed men have circulated.
The five responsible for the forceful exit of the councillor claimed to have received instructions to do so by the Amathole District Municipality Manager.
Nanziwe Rulashe said the incident occured after a dispute arose in a meeting.
She was asked to leave her office and when she refused was dragged out by two men and a woman.

Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC Xolile Nqatha, condemned the incident.
“What’s disturbing is that there is a woman involved in an act of gender-based violence against another woman.”
Nqatha is calling for the Amathole District Municipality Executive Mayor Nceba Ndikinda, to provide a detailed report on how those involved will be held accountable.
Mayor Ndikinda has vowed to investigate the incident.
