Wearing sunglasses indoors or at night isn’t a trend reserved for A-list celebrities who are hoping to either maintain their level of coolness or attempt to go unnoticed. So, before you judge people who wear sunglasses indoors or at night, bear in mind that medical conditions and eye disorders may be amongst their reasons.
The Kaya Drive team shared their opinions on those who wear sunglasses indoors and at night and Keneiloe Huma feels that some people just wear sunglasses everywhere to be extra and to look cool.
Besides sun protection, the condition photophobia, where a person is extremely light-sensitive may be why some people opt to shield their eyes from harsh light and use sunglasses. The condition can cause migraines and make being in a room with bright lights difficult.
The glare from a PC, the fluorescent light or the reflection of the sun, glare from the lights while driving can trigger between 30% and 60% of migraine attacks. Many of the Kaya Drive listeners pointed out that sunglasses should only be worn during the day, when it’s sunny and should be reserved for the outdoors, however UV rays are present even on dull or overcast days.

Apart from photophobia, a number of people suffer from dry eyes and sunglasses may help protect their eyes, especially in an air-conditioned room.
There are other reasons why people wear sunglasses indoors and at night and these could include:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Grief
- Blindness/Partial blindness
- Hangover
- To hide that they’ve been crying or a physical injury ie. black eye
- Introverts may use sunglasses to avoid making eye contact with people
Celebrities have obviously given the sunglass culture somewhat of a vain perspective but it’s not always the case. It’s a cool accessory that can pull a look together and there are pretty cool designs and brands that make sunglasses such a sought after and popular fashion item.
