Alcohol abuse, smoking, drugs and any other form of addiction doesn’t just affect the person drinking—it affects their families and loved ones, too.
Watching a friend or family member struggle with a drinking problem can be as heartbreakingly painful as it is frustrating.
Your loved one may be disrupting family life by neglecting their responsibilities, getting into financial and legal difficulties, or mistreating or even abusing you and other family members.

Witnessing your loved one’s drinking and the deterioration of your relationship can trigger many distressing emotions, including shame, fear, anger, and self-blame. Your loved one’s addiction may even be so overwhelming that it seems easier to ignore it and pretend that nothing is wrong. But in the long run denying it will only bring more harm to you, your loved one with the problem, and the rest of your family.
Thomas and Shumba asked Kaya 959 listeners to share a time when they we helped out of their addiction by friends and family:

One social media user share how she helped her husband stop drinking by taking him to the mortuary.
“My husband was a drunkard, every time I was called to go and take him from the gutters when he was drunk. Sometimes I find him in a coma, my family asked me to leave him but I didn’t want because I was hoping he will change.
At one point, I was tired, I couldn’t take it any longer, and I decided to change it some other way. One day I was called to pick him up and I went, I carried him straight to the morgue. I negotiated with the mortuary man to lay him on the ground among the corpses. Two hours later my husband woke up and began by begging the mortuary man not to put him in the fridge that he is not dead. The mortuary man started to whip him hard saying “you corpses you come do witchcraft here, go lie down there”. My husband begged so much, after a moment of caning, the mortuary man let him out. He came back home and from that day he has never gone near anything called alcohol.”
Find out as much as you can about the effects of alcohol and the signs of alcohol misuse so you have facts on hand.
A conversation when they’ve been drinking or are stressed is likely to trigger a lot of emotions that could get out of hand. Choose a time when you’re both well-rested and clearheaded.
