Joburg residents wait with bated breath that a new mayor of the city will be voted in on Friday, 05 May.
This after a special council sitting to elect a new Executive Mayor on Tuesday ended prematurely.
The vote for a new mayor comes two weeks after Al Jama-ah councillor Thapelo Amad, resigned from the role.
Amad resigned prior to a council meeting where he was set to face a motion of no-confidence.
While the DA in Gauteng are hopeful that ousted Mpho Phalatse takes the helm for a third time, the PA have expressed their preference for Deputy President, Kenny Kunene to take over as mayor.
Phalatse was reinstated as mayor after the first vote of no confidence was deemed unlawful, unconstitutional, and invalid.
The PA are not willing to support Phalatse, with PA leader Gayton McKenzie outlining that Phalatse’s insults of the party, do not earn her any support.
“We cannot vote for a mayor from the party that has been insulting us. Kenny Kunene makes the easiest path to a new government, but it’s not the only option on the table that we’ve discussed.
We hold the balance of power, surely that must mean something.”
Coalition partnerships regarding the mayoral vote have been tested strenuously over the past few years, and with 8 mayors over the past 8 years, it doesn’t bode well for residents who are desperate for service delivery.
