British singer and songwriter, Ed Sheeran has expressed his happiness at winning the copyright infringement case against him.
This after Marvin Gaye’s songwriter Ed Townsend, launched a lawsuit against the Perfect hitmaker, for allegedly copying the late icon’s classic “Let’s Get It On.”
Sheeran was accused of using “the heart” of Gaye’s 1973 classic to put together his 2014 hit, Thinking Out Loud.
While the lyrics to both songs are completely different, Townsend claimed Sheeran unlawfully used the harmonic progressions and melodic, rhythmic elements to complete his track.
Townsend further accused Sheeran of copying those elements and repeating them continuously throughout Thinking Out Loud.
Sheeran’s 2014 hit is one of his most popular love songs, which is often used as an opening dance for couples on their wedding day.
The 32-year old singer said if the court finds that he is guilty of copyright infringement, he will quit music because he finds the entire accusation insulting.
Speaking after winning his copyright case, Sheeran said he’s happy with the outcome, which means he will now not need to quit his day job.
“I’m obviously very happy with the outcome of this case, and it looks like I won’t have to quit my day job after all. But at the same time, I’m incredibly frustrated that baseless claims like this are allowed to go to court at all.
We’ve spent the past 8-years speaking about two songs with dramatically different lyrics, melodies and 4-chords, which are also different and used by songwriters everyday, all over the world.
These chords are common building blocks which were used to create music long before Let’s Get It On was written, and will be used to make music long after we are all gone
They are in a songwriters alphabet, our toolkit, and should be there for all of us to use. No one owns them or the way they are played, in the same way no one owns the colour blue.”
