The City of Joburg will have eight mayors in eight years after the new mayor is elected.
Thapelo Amad was the last mayor of the city and resigned after just 12 weeks.
The city held a council meeting on Tuesday, 2 May that started at 10am, and still failed to elect a new mayor.
Here is a look at the past seven individuals who held the position:

Reasons for leaving? ANC lost their majority vote in Johannesburg.
Herman Mashaba
Time in office: 2016-2019
Reasons for leaving? Resigned due to differences in DA party leadership.
Geoff Makhubu
Time in office: 2019 – 2021
Reasons for leaving? Died from COVID-19 complications.
Jilodee Matongo
Time in office: August – September 2021
Reasons for leaving? Died in a car accident.
Mpho Moerane
Time in office: 2021
Reasons for leaving? lost to Mpho Phalatse in the election for mayor.
Mpho Phalatse
Time in office: 2021-2023
Reasons for leaving? Phalatse is successfully ousted for the second time following a motion of no confidence.
Dada Morero
Time in office: 30 September 2022 – 25 October 2022
Reasons for leaving? Phalatse is reinstated as mayor after the first vote of no confidence was deemed unlawful, unconstitutional, and invalid.
Thapelo Amad
Time in office: February 2023 – April 2023
Reasons for leaving? Resignation
The failed attempt to elect a new mayor has delayed the process to Friday, 5 May.
