Kaya Biz chats to the founder of Ekasi Spaza shop stokvel.
Township entrepreneurs have expressed excitement over a new innovative initiative aimed helping Spaza Shop owners.
The Spaza Shop Stokvel deals with problems spaza shops owners encounter. These include bulk purchasing and market access.
Members of the stokvel have the chance to make financial contributions, establish, and manage a spaza shop, which will be managed on their behalf by the stokvel.
The Spaza Shop Tool also upgrades the spaza shop and provide cabinets, refrigerators, and points of sale.

LISTEN TO THE FULL CONVERSATION HERE:
“The idea is basically a stokvel and a franchise – two ideas coming together. A lot of our parents and people are struggling with Spaza shops, so what we have done is to use technology to keep up with the changes.
“For example, companies like Nokia also died because of other companies came with better technology. Even the CEO said that there was nothing wrong that they did, but others did better than them.”
“With eKasi Spaza Shop Stokvel, what we do is that this is a Stokvel where people come together and contribute money, it is now in a franchise model, we then bring all the processes and system, you can be an investor and don’t even have to be inside the shop.”
“We send you reports, to show you how your Spaza shop is performing. With the Spaza Shop Stokvel we have services we offer such as bulk buying, local producers, we also provide your shelving.” says Sangweni.
