Two drivers were killed and six schoolchildren critically injured in a head-on collision in Nietgedacht on Wednesday.
“Paramedics responded to the scene and found absolute carnage. A light utility vehicle and a school bus had collided at high impact. The drivers of both vehicles were declared dead on arrival,” says Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen.
Paramedics found six schoolchildren in a critical condition.
“Advanced life support paramedics worked fervently to stabilise them and the assistance of the Netcare911 aeromedical helicopter was called for back to back flights, airlifting two of the most critical to a specialist facility for immediate definitive care,” says van Reenen
Paramedics transported the remaining four children to nearby hospitals for further care.

In a separate incident, a driver who failed to stop at a roadside checkpoint died after his vehicle crashed into a wall and burst into flames on Wednesday.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says offices were stopping vehicles in Regents Park, south of Johannesburg when they asked the driver to stop.
“Officers had to chase behind a silver-grey Mazda SUV which had failed to stop. The male driver, in his 40s, smashed through a locked gate of an undeveloped property on Vickers Road and collided with a brick wall. The Mazda then burst into flames,” he says.
Minnaar adds that officers found three firearms at the scene. They also found ammunition inside the burnt vehicle.
“An inquest will be opened to establish the cause of the driver’s death,” Minnaar says.
