Councillor safety has been thrust into the spotlight after a third ward councillor candidate was killed in KwaZulu-Natal.
Police discovered the charred remains of NFP ward councillor candidate, Dumisani Qwabe, in KwaNongoma on Monday night.
Officers received an alert about a burning vehicle on the R66.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo says officers discovered a badly burnt human body inside the vehicle.
Magudu SAPS are investigating an inquest. It is alleged that Qwabe was ambushed and fatally shot.
Qwabe’s family confirmed he had been driving the vehicle that police found.

ANC offers condolences
The ANC has meanwhile offered its condolences and urged police to track down Qwabe’s killers.
“Although the details regarding Qwabe’s death are still sketchy at this point and the motive is still unknown, the ANC as the leader of society is deeply concerned about such incidents in the province,” says ANC provincial spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela.
He called on Minister of Police Bheki Cele to establish a multi-disciplinary police task team to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators involved in these killings.
“We also call on the SAPS crime intelligence to work hard towards ending these brutal killings of people in the province. We urge the people of Nongoma to assist the police with whatever information that can lead to the arrest of the killers,” says Ntombela.
Last week, EFF candidate Michael Thulani Shangase was shot dead in Plessislaer. Gunmen confronted the Kwanyamazane resident while he was on his way home. He reportedly had just attended an EFF campaign meeting in Dambula.
Police have not established a motive for the killing yet. Just days before, ANC ward candidate hopeful Siyabonga Mkhize was shot dead in Cato Crest.
The ANC believes these killings should not be allowed to dampen the spirit of the electorate or deter them from exercising their democratic right to vote on 1 November.
