City Power says each transformer had about 20 litres each of oil for insulation. Emergency teams used foam to put out the fire.
The fire razed down two main transformers and damaged other equipment – leaving many areas in Johannesburg south in darkness.
“Two transformers that survived the fire were energised earlier on Wednesday after passing all the tests on Tuesday,” says City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
Residents had no electricity for nearly 48 hours. Some of the affected areas included Crown Gardens, Ridgeway, Goldreef City, Ormonde, Booysens Reserve, Ophirton, Southdale. Parts of Winchester and Nasrec were also without power.

Mangena says teams of technicians responded to the fire. He says the team tested another feeder board to ensure all the outstanding suburbs including Aeroton, Ormonde Industrial, Robertsham Industrial, West Turfontein and Chrisville were all switched back on.
“We also attended to the localised faults which happened during the outage,” Mangena says.
