Another day, another Cristiano Ronaldo headline as the Portuguese striker makes history as the first footballer to score in 5 World Cups.
With news of the footballer’s departure from Manchester United breaking earlier this week, it seems Ronaldo is on a mission to prove his career is far from over.
This as the 37-year old scored a penalty when Portugal took on Ghana, to seal his name in the record books.
The Portugal captain scored in the 65th minute in his 18th appearance for his home country.
Ronaldo said it was a very proud moment for him and now that his chapter at Man United is closed, his focus is solely on the World Cup and his goal to finally win it.
“It’s a beautiful moment, in my fifth World Cup. We won, we started off on the right foot, a very important victory. We know that in these competitions winning the first game is crucial.
Another record too, the only player to score in five consecutive World Cups, that for me it is a reason of great pride.
The important thing was that the team won. The [Manchester United] chapter is closed, and the focus is solely and exclusively on the World Cup.
As I said, we wanted to start off on the right foot. We won, we played well, I helped the team. Everything else is not important. The important thing is the national team.”
Cristiano Ronaldo on his record at the World Cup
It was Ronaldo’s 118th international goal since making his debut in the World Cup in 2006.
With this being Cristiano Ronaldo’s last World Cup, he is looking to win the title for Portugal before he bows out.
Ronaldo’s life-long rival, Lionel Messi is amongst four players to have scored in 4 World Cups.
The former Manchester United forward will need to secure a deal in January after parting ways with the English club.
