Mpumelelo Mhlongo has won the South Africa’s first medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. He became the first medalist from Mzanzi, winning gold at the Stade de France on Sunday.
Mhlongo, who lives and works in Johannesburg, entered the men’s T44 100m final as the favorite and delivered in front of 80,000 ecstatic spectators.
He led from start to finish in lane four, overcoming the challenge posed by Cuban Yamel Vives Suarez and crossing the line in 11.12 seconds.

Khumo Pitso, a high jumper, finished fifth in the men’s T24 category with an AREA RECORD leap of 1.98m, while Liezel Gouws finished eighth in the women’s T37 long jump.
Puseletso Mabote equaled the PARALYMPIC RECORD by winning his T63 100m heat in 12.05 seconds, becoming the fastest qualifier heading into the final.
Earlier, Louzanne Coetzee, a double medalist from Tokyo, established herself as a medal contender by qualifying second fastest for the women’s T11 1500m final at the Stade de France.
