Speaking to Kaya 959, founder of Basadi in Music, Hloni Modise shared her vision of changing the music awards landscape by empowering women.
“I’ve worked in the music industry for a long time, and as a woman you have to work 20 times harder than men, just to get recognition. Now that things have changed a little and you have female composers, female producers, women who own production companies, I just said you know what it’s time.”
Hloni Modise, founder of Basadi in Music
The idea for an all-woman’s music awards was born during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was then that Modise realised that it was now or never to get her dream off the ground.
Modise sent out her proposal to 30 companies, all of which declined, until the South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA) approved the plan.
Kaya 959 is a partner of the Basadi In Music Awards and will be bringing you exclusive coverage of the awards.
