Legendary South African gospel singer, Deborah Fraser has died.
The 56-year old passed away on Sunday, 15 May after battling a short illness. News of her death has been met with great sadness as Fraser was one of the country’s multi-award winning gospel artists.
In a statement released by her family, the beloved mother, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her family and loved ones when she passed.
The family have asked for space and privacy while they come to terms with their tragic loss.
“It is with deep sadness to inform you of the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, friend and Gospel musician. The public will be further informed of developments around her final arrangements.”
The veteran singer’s death comes a month after reports that the singer could no longer walk. She was seen performing from a wheelchair but has not been active in the industry for some time.
Deborah Fraser began her career in 1985 as a backing singer, and recorded her own album in 2000, titled Abanye bayombona. The album has sold over 1 million copies.
In November 2021, Fraser was awarded an honorary doctorate by Trinity International Bible University in Ghana.
Meanwhile, the ANC and EFF have expressed sadness at Fraser’s passing.
“Mama Deborah Fraser was an activist in her own right and a loyal supporter of the movement. She performed at our events without any hesitation, using her melodious voice to re-energize our support base. Her hit-song “MINA NGOHLALA NGINJE” became our electioneering anthem and still enjoys air play during our events,” said ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe.
The EFF sends its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the legendary Gospel Singer, Deborah Fraser.
