Bonang Matheba’s tweet that South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, is “useless and that we all hate you” has set social media ablaze, and many seem to agree with her sentiments.
The Sport, Arts and Culture Ministry’s declaration that it plans to spend R22 million on a statue called “flag project” has sparked controversy.
The department plans on plans to erect the 120-metre flag at the Freedom Park Heritage site in Pretoria as a symbol of unity and democracy.
Yesterday media personality Bonang Matheba reacted to the news of the project on social media.

Mthethwa justified his decision, claiming that the flag project was not wasteful and was required by his department. The flag initiative, he says also symbolized a rupture from colonialism and apartheid.
“One of the mandates of this department is to transform the heritage landscape among others, build museums, build monuments,” the minister said.
He stated, “It carries and epitomizes democratic values.”
Bonang was reacting to a viral interview where the Minister was continuing with his explanation of why the department needed to spend R 22 million on a flag.
She responded to the Minister’s utterance by saying “Fire this man. Please.”

Other errors have been committed by the department throughout this administration.
In 2021, an independent forensic investigation into allegations of misappropriation of funds intended to assist artists during lockdown revealed that some applicants received more money than they should have while other artists waited for funds, and that some of the funds had allegedly been misappropriated.
