English media tried to make a storm out of a tea cup about a group of Manchester City players being on a night out at the weekend.
A video surfaced showing Jack Grealish being denied entry at a bar and it was insinuated that Grealish was drunk.
The 100-million-pound man was out with his teammates Riyad Mahrez, Kyle Walker and Grealish for dinner, along with some of the backroom staff.
Pep Guardiola was expectedly asked about the incident and he joked about it.
“I’m so upset because they didn’t invite me, and I don’t like it. Next time, hopefully, they can invite me and do the dinner correctly at eight o’clock like they have done. The video didn’t show exactly what happened, dinner together, sober, enjoying with his mates, and some of the backroom staff, so…the players know, so they are risking by going out because today there’s social media. All of them, Riyad, Kyle, Ali, Jack, they were perfect, but they will be fined because they didn’t invite me” said Guardiola.
The spotlight was placed on Grelaish because in December, Guardiola reprimanded him and Phil Foden for going out following City’s 7-0 win over Leeds United in the Premier League.
This is not the first time a City player’s life away from the game has come under the magnifying glass.
In 2018, the English Football Association jumped to Raheem Sterling’s defence over a tattoo of a gun on his right leg, which was criticised by the tabloid press.
