David Moyes had to answer for his decision to pick Kurt Zouma for West Ham United’s Premier League game against Watford, given all the controversy surrounding the French defender.
Zouma has been at the centre of an animal cruelty storm, this after a video of him kicking and slapping his pet cat surfaced on social media.
The Metro Police has declined to investigate the matter, meanwhile the RSPCA has condemned the video and have said “we will always look into and, if necessary, investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare.”
Zouma was booed by fans at London Stadium, even though the Hammers won the game 1-0, to move back into the top four on the Premier League table.
A journalist asked Moyes if he felt selecting Zouma, under the current circumstance, was morally flawed, and the manager said “for me, yeah, because I’m a big animal lover and I think it’s something which will have affected a lot of people, so I’m really disappointed with it. But as I said before, my job tonight was to try for West Ham and put the team to give me the best chance.”
The 27-year-old has since apologized for his actions, but calls have been made by some organisations for his sacking from the club.
